Con and Jan McGill were once the youngest
homebuilders in the Omaha area. After working for three years as a carpenter,
Con started his own construction business, framing homes and doing small
remodel jobs.
The next year, Con started building custom homes,
and in spite of being the mother of four toddlers, Jan decided that she would
get involved with the business. Con worked on the construction site while
Jan managed the office, worked with customers on plan development and interior
design as well as taking care of the day to day problems that arise in the
home building business.
They designed most of the ten to fifteen homes they
built during an average year. They also did several Commercial and residential
remodeling projects each year.
During the last few years as custom homebuilders,
they found the market was changing. As a small homebuilder, it was becoming
more difficult each year to get the quality workmanship to which their customers
had grown accustomed. The high quality subcontractors found it easier to
work for a builder that would have them go from home to home, thus squeezing
out the smaller builders.
Con received his Real Estate Brokers License in
1968 and had used it occasionally, but was always unconformable representing
the seller, as was required by the law at that time. He always felt that
his expertise was helping buyers find homes, so he wasn't very active in
that part of the business.
When the law was finally changed to allow Buyer's
Agents to participate fully in the traditional real estate transaction, they
decided to form an Exclusive Buyer's Agency. Con and Jan, who also received
her real estate license in 1968, formed "Your Buyer's Broker" as an Exclusive
Buyer's Agency. This was the first Exclusive Buyer's Agency in Nebraska.
They have kept the company small, just the two of
them, and will represent buyers only, while resisting all temptation to accept
listings. Their clients love the fact that they have construction knowledge
and offer a pressure free environment. For those clients who want build
new homes, Con and Jan can provide a service that is unmatched almost anywhere.
They have been married 35 years, have eight children
and five grandchildren. Jan is also a licensed registered nurse and is a
past president of the Metropolitan Omaha Builders Assn Women's Auxiliary.
Con is a life director of the Metropolitan Omaha Builders Assn. and a life
Spike in the National Association of Home Builders. They are members of the
Omaha Area Board of REALTORS®, The Great Plains REALTORS'® Multiple
Listing Service and the National Association of Exclusive Buyer's Agents.
